Orange Hand-Painted Retablo Nativity Box

Set this little retablo on the mantelpiece or a side table when the Christmas decorations come out, and open its doors to the nativity inside. Retablo means altarpiece, and these small nativity boxes with doors are a traditional Peruvian design.

The figures are made from a traditional mix of plaster, cooked potato and newspaper, then painted in vivid colours and lacquered to finish. Close the doors and it becomes a neat little box again.
